The Hunting of the Snark

snark
"Just the place for a Snark!"

snark
"I engage with the Snark
every night after dark
in a dreamy, delirious fight..."
snark
"'Tis the voice of the Jubjub!"

snark
...Erect and sublime, for one moment of time...

The Hunting of the Snark - an agony in eight fits is, next to Alice, the best book Lewis Carroll wrote. It's a long, nonsensical epic poem, describing the quest of eight characters (all of whose names begin with a B) for a mysterious creature, the Snark. I made these illustrations in 1976. There are four others - one for each fit - but those drawings didn't turn out too well.
The complete poem - with the original illustrations, but without the dedicatory poem and the preface - can be found at this site
